Final presentation

The big idea

The world has become more stressful.

World Health Organization predicts burn out syndrome to become a global pandemic in the next decade. Big workloads, stressful environment, being available 24/7 and living up to the ideals of being a good partner, parent etc. seems to be important contributors. During a day of continuous input and output, when do we get the time to process it?

We tend to need some time for ourselves, while the trend seems to be putting more people in open offices exposed to each other. Do we get the time to lower our shoulders, when we’re always in others company? Who haven’t spent some extra minutes in the rest room just enjoying some time alone?

Siesta offers an accessible place to get some personal space and a good place to rest. In my contribution I’ve tried to facilitate for meditation, praying and power napping which are good old existing ways of handling stress and being able to “recharge” in a hectic daily life. Big companies such as Google are already facilitating these behaviors for their workers. Studies conducted by NASA and Harvard say a nap can increase productivity by up to 34 percent.

My solution uses the central space not being used during daytime. A nightclub is a good example of such a place. Siesta could contribute as an extra income for the nightclub owner as well as being a good way of improving our daily lives.

Feedback from peers
Anders, Clark

"How does the door work?"

"I like the "light ball" idea"

"First system is more like scenario."

"What fixes the cup that is suppose to hold the tent?"

"Is it possible to make a breathing fabric that doesn't let sound through?"

"Could you wake up by vibrations in the mattress."

"Your boss, what does that mean?"

"Could your system also indicate time of day and who that does what?"

"Does the bathroom need to be in the system?"

"Use renderings to show the packing and unpacking of the tent. More believable."

"A bit labour intensive."

"Show your research on how long a power nap should last."

"Good flexible system."

"Good use of free space, and smart packing of the modules."

Some of the feedback from tutor

"Design a structure for the tent to collapse in the right way."

"I like the simplicity."

"Maybe look at ways to add more benefits."

"Add more details to your design: How the hook is attached, how is it cleaned, change batteries, ventilation, mattress etc."

"Show how the door works."

"Show all stakeholders in system map."

"Maybe show locations of possible night clubs to put it."

Reflection
For next week I'll work more with the details in my design. Look into the details that strengthens the overall design: Decide what fabrics I'm using, how it collapses, structure, how the blanket, sheets and matress look, add branding, change batteries, how the door works etc.

Weekly Consultation

Feedback from tutor
What enables your design?
Start sketching more solutions.
Is it other more applicable places to put it? Gym? Parks?

Reflection
I will prioritize sketching and exploring more solutions within the boundaries given from my research. The idea of an adaptable area fits well with my research and I think my product should try to enable this service to be available from 1 to 3 pm, and invisible the rest of the day. So I will have this in mind while working further with my solution.

"Making the interface nice, if it's a car thing."

"Pick up."

"How can you remove the barriers you found?"

"Look more into current markeds."

"Community market."

"How the products are presented"

Reflection

I've got nice input for my concepts. I've chosen to work further with the "Siesta" / "Time out"-concept. I'll do further research on powernaps, when it's needed, where the product could be placed, how the system could work etc. I'll take walks around in the city and try to think about who would need it, in what settings and where it could be placed. I also will do some open interviews to
